Regent's Report

March 10, 1998

Kevin Langdon

Although the intricacies of the current political situation in TNS have generated hundreds of thousands of words over the past year, there are only two areas of fundamental difference:

1. Whether TNS organizational affairs should be open to any interested member and the pages of Vidya should be open to members who wish to communicate with their fellow members about these affairs, or the ExCom should quietly run things behind the scenes.

2. Whether TNS should use both new, "home-brew" I.Q. tests and standard tests, according to their quality, their g-loading, and their ability to reach high levels of the adult population, or we should avoid the use of tests which the state of California considers illegal and use a long list of standard tests, including tests of "crystallized g" and childhood tests.

These are the matters at the heart of the difference between Mr. Hook and his "Reformers" and the school of thought to which I belong.

The election underway as I write this will not necessarily resolve these matters.

So we are going to have a poll on these two things. I ask every one of you to express your views. We need to know where the membership stands on these issues.

I have asked our Elections Officer, Phil Frandina, to receive responses to this poll and report the results, and he has agreed to do so.

Let's resolve these matters and put the current controversy behind us.

Mark your choices on this sheet or a copy or just note them (unambiguously, please) on plain paper or in an e-mail message and send them to Phil Frandina, [contact information omitted]. Please include your membership number for authentication. Even though this isn't an official election, we'd still like to avoid a rigged outcome.
